12/4/2019 0 Comments Summary synthesis My Interdisciplinary studies degree title is “Mental Health.” I created this program because it is a combination of the two majors that really interest me and that I would like to learn more about, Health and Psychology. No other program here at Plymouth State is right for me because nothing teaches me the variety of content that I am interested in. Interdisciplinary Studies provides me with the opportunity to combine the best of several subject areas around a single theme and allow me to experience college in a way that interests and inspires me. For my Research Article, I focus on stress in college students and how to reduce it. I decided to research this topic because I am a college student that understands the stress we go through during our 4 years of school. Stress is something that most everyone goes through at some point in their life. A lot of college students are stressed and they don’t know how to get rid of it so most students just deal with it but dealing with this stress for a long period of time can hurt your body and your mental health so it is good to try and reduce it. During this project I was about to research and learn a few different techniques for college students to reduce their stress. These techniques are Meditation, Yoga, Planning/Scheduling and Leisurely activities. This research projects contributed to my education because it widened my knowledge of stress and how it can really affect our mental health. For my Applied Project, I decided to use the information I learned during my research project and put it towards something that will help people. I created a podcast that is directed for college students to help them reduce their stress. The podcast is called "Stress Reducing Techniques for College Students." In this podcast I talked about the different stressors in college students' lives such as juggling classes, projects, work, friends, family, ect. Chronic stress increases the risk of developing depression and anxiety in some people. I chose this topic for this project because I wanted to share some easy, cheap ways college students can reduce their stress. This projects contributes to my education because I am working towards a future where I will help children with mental illnesses. Completing my Interdisciplinary Studies degree has really taught me so much, from new skills to new information and research that will help me with my future career in Mental Health. The IDS program teaches us to look at majors on a deeper level and see where valuable connections can be made. I am very happy that I chose to be an Interdisciplinary Studies major.

I find mental health to be something that affects everyone in different ways. Almost everyone knows someone with a mental illness or someone that has been affected by mental health. There is a big stigma on mental health when there shouldn't be. Mental illness is much more common than most people think. With this PLN Plan I am able to tweet different things I have learned and I find important. I am also able to retweet other people's tweets that I find interesting and want to share with my followers. I want people to be aware that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and that no one is alone. Being human can be hard. We all have these things called thoughts and emotions that have a grip on our well-being. The triggers can have a negative effect on our behavior, mental and physical health. Mental health stigma is a huge barrier on why many people don’t seek help but I want to change that. With my twitter account on mental health I retweet articles on mental health and different ways people can get help. When it comes to my own tweets I like to post encouraging quotes about mental illness that let people know that it’s okay and that their not alone. My PLN plan is very important to me because it has really helped me concentrate on what I find important. It’s also a good way to get information out into the world and help make a difference in people’s lives. My PLN Plan has really helped me further my education. It has helped me learn different ways to use social media, especially twitter. There are so many new ways to use twitter and different things you can do on it. One thing that I really enjoy about twitter is that someone all the way across the world can see what I post and I am able to see what they post. It's a great way to communicate and see other peoples views on mental health. My PLN Plan has also helped me further my education because it is an easy way for me to read new articles and studies that have come out. I plan to use this twitter for the rest of my college and work career, for it will help me in so many different ways. Below is one of the posts I have recently retweeted. The account is called “Mental Health American”. I found this post to be important and wanted my follower to see so that is why I retweeted it. This post talks about a day on December 16th at the New Hampshire Town Hall where there will be a meeting where people will come together to unite for mental health. At this meeting they will discuss solutions for America’s struggling with the mental health care system. Below is one of my tweets. I wanted to share this tweet with you guys because I find this quote to be important. You should always keep in mind that you never know how someone is feeling, so you should always be friendly. Even just showing a smile while you walk past someone could make their day, its as easy as that. Below is another one of my tweets. This tweet shows one great way to help reduce stress. As we all know our lives can be very busy and stressful. Sometimes it seems like there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done but we need to start taking a moment for ourselves and our mental health. Some people may use it while driving, working out, dancing, or singing. We also use music at events such as weddings, graduations, birthday parties and funerals. Music can represent many different emotions. Some people consider music as a way to escape from life and help reduce stress.
There are many different kinds of music in the world from religious songs to banging on a drum set. Music plays a more important role in our life than just being a source of entertainment. Music makes us creative, helps us express our emotions, and it can also help us learn in a pleasant way. In my life I use music for many different things. There's certain music I like to listen to in the car while driving and their certain music that helps me relax when I'm stressed or anxious. 12/2/2019 0 Comments My PLN PLan My PLN Plan is a Twitter account I made about a year ago where I follow many different accounts that concentrate on mental health. This applied project has become very important to me by helping me with my major and my soon to be career. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major concentrating on mental health. This applied project has helped me learn so much new information. For this project I have been concentrating on stress in college students and how to reduce it. As a college student I have realized how much stress can really affect our everyday life and I wanted to help my peers. I chose this topic for this project because I wanted to find some easy, cheap ways college students can reduce their stress. As college students, we all like the words cheap and easy. Sometimes we feel like we have no free time during the day because we always have so much going on either with homework, projects and work but we need to start taking a little time out of our day to concentrate on our wellbeing. With this being said my applied project is a podcast. I decided to make a podcast that gives advice on stress and different ways to reduce it. By making this podcast it is an easy way for college students to listen and get the advice they need. Podcasts are a popular thing now days where you can be driving, doing homework, working out and still be listening to these interesting recordings. Here is the link to my Podcast: Listen to "Stress Reducing Techniques for College Students" from Hailey D on Anchor Stress is something that most everyone goes through at some point in their life. Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. There are many different things in our daily lives that can cause stress and anxiety. The cause of stress can be different in everyone. It can be caused by something minor like forgetting to finish a homework assignment or it can be caused by the loss of a loved one. Everyone deals with stress differently. Stress is key for survival, but too much stress can be detrimental. Emotional stress that stays around for weeks or months can weaken the immune system and cause high blood pressure, fatigue, depression, anxiety and even heart disease. Ongoing, chronic stress, can cause or exacerbate many serious health problems, including: Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks, and stroke. Stress is very common in college students. College students can become very stressed especially freshmen and sophomores because it is a big transition into college life. Being a freshman and sophomore can also be stressful because they may have to share a room with a roommate and that could be something they have never had to do before. There are many different things that can cause stress in undergraduate college students. For example A student who is attending school and is working can become stressed from feeling overwhelmed. Paying for school can be stressful because college is very expensive and so are all the things that go with it, such as books, food ect. Low class college students may have more stress than higher class college students because they are worried about paying for college but they may also be worried about their family back at home. College students who attend different schools may have different stressors as well. For example, college students that attend UNH may be more stressed than kids who attend PSU. This could be because UNH is a much bigger campus with more students. There are a few different easy and cheap ways undergraduate college students can reduce their stress. A few of these are Meditation, Yoga, Planning/Scheduling and Leisurely activities. Meditation is a mind and body practice that has a long history of use for increasing calmness and physical relaxation. Meditation would help college students clear their mind and relax.(Oman) Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical poses and controlled breathing. (Villate) This will help relax and lower blood pressure. Planning and scheduling will help reduce stress by keeping them on top of their homework and deadlines. Lastly leisurely activities will help college students reduce their stress by getting their mind off of what is causing the stress.(Misra) As a college student, I realize that taking time out of the day can sometimes be hard but it is really important to reduce stress because it can lead to more intense issues. There are a few things that could be done to increase the likelihood of college students doing some of these stress reducing activities. One thing that should be done is that every college should offer free group activities such as yoga or meditation classes. A college student it more likely to go to a yoga or meditation class if it is cheap/free and nearby. The second thing that should be done is posters or flyers in busy areas such as cafeteria, library, coffee places etc, about these yoga or meditation classes and where they are being offerened. Another thing that could be done is having a speaker come to colleges and talk about different stress relieving techniques such as planning/scheduling. Lastly there could be a club that anyone can join whenever they want and do a new leshurly activity each or every other week. Bethany Ao. “Stressed-out college students are sleeping less than ever. Studies show that interactions with therapy animals can decrease stress in humans. Playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. Hospitals, schools and universities use this strategy to help reduce the stress level in patients and students who are usually stressed. Being in the hospital can be a hard time for patients, their family and friends. School can also be very stressful. Most kids and adults who participate in school have a lot on their plate and it can be overwhelming. By having support animals come into these settings it will really help reduce these peoples stress. I believe this really works. Last week I was walking to class and saw the cutest, most fluffy support dog walking with its owner. Seeing this furry pet immediately put a smile on my face and I forgot about all my stress for a couple minutes. I went over to the dog to pet it and show it some love. Just by being with this dog for less than 5 minutes it made my day. I walked away from the dog more happy and positive. I believe if colleges, schools, workplaces and hospitals brought in a support dog once a week it would increase the people in these environments mood and decrease their stress. 11/13/2019 0 Comments RA Outline1. There are many different things that can cause a person to become stressed and everyone's stress is different. In today's world everyone seems so busy working, taking care of their families, etc. that they don’t have any time to concentrate on themselves. My advice is to make time for yourself, even if it is only for 30 minutes. In this time you could do yoga. Yoga is proven to be a great stress relief technique. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical poses, controlled breathing, and meditation or relaxation.
Yoga may help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, lower your heart rate and help you get in shape. Yoga is also something easy that most everyone can do at any age. There are many different kinds of yoga such as Anusara, Ashtanga, Bikram, Hatha, Hot Yoga, Iyengar, Restorative, and Vinyasa. All these different kinds of yoga styles work for reducing stress. You can choose to do any of these styles to see which one works best for you. There are also many different places around the world that teach yoga class. You can also look up yoga classes online, or do it on your own at home. Yoga helps reduce stress by relaxing the body. Yoga practiced in the right way can be as soothing as a hug or a massage when it comes to reducing tension and relaxing the physical body. Certain postures have a deeply calming effect on the whole system, particularly forward bends and inversions. It also helps relax the mind. Meditation is an incredibly powerful tool for relaxing and slowing down the mind as is any kind of breath awareness. Yoga also helps reduce stress by teaching you how to breathe more efficiently. Stress and tension can cause us to breathe in a rapid, shallow way, which can lead to more anxiety. Yoga gives you the opportunity to breathe more effectively, using the diaphragm and utilising the whole lung capacity. Lastly yoga helps reduce stress by releasing emotional energy. We actually release emotional energy really effectively throughout yoga practice, even if you’re not aware of it. |
