Studies show that interactions with therapy animals can decrease stress in humans. Playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. Hospitals, schools and universities use this strategy to help reduce the stress level in patients and students who are usually stressed. Being in the hospital can be a hard time for patients, their family and friends. School can also be very stressful. Most kids and adults who participate in school have a lot on their plate and it can be overwhelming. By having support animals come into these settings it will really help reduce these peoples stress. I believe this really works. Last week I was walking to class and saw the cutest, most fluffy support dog walking with its owner. Seeing this furry pet immediately put a smile on my face and I forgot about all my stress for a couple minutes. I went over to the dog to pet it and show it some love. Just by being with this dog for less than 5 minutes it made my day. I walked away from the dog more happy and positive. I believe if colleges, schools, workplaces and hospitals brought in a support dog once a week it would increase the people in these environments mood and decrease their stress.
