My experience with academic disciplines was going through elementary school, high school and now college. Elementary school was good because they teach you the basic information you need to start your education. They teach you a little bit of everything. Highschool is when that changes. In highschool most of your classes are picked for you until you get into 11th and 12th grade then you get more independence picking the certain classes you want to learn about but even then there are still limitations. Some high schools are becoming better and offering programs where you can take classes about nursing or mechanic that can really help you before college. College is when you start to get freedom to pick whatever you want to study for example when you pick your major. Picking a major in something you find interesting and want to learn more about is great but you only really learn about that one subject that will help you get a degree. I think interdiscipline is a great major because it has taught me many things. I’ve learned a lot about different subjects i am interested in instead of just studying one specific subject. I think it’s good to learn a many different subjects because that can help you in the real world when it come to getting a job. An employer is going to want someone who can bring something new to the table and help them expand their business. “The History of the Academy and the Discipline” article gave great information on the academic disciplines and how they got to be the way they are. A quote from this article that I found interesting was “The disciplines that we have been taught since the beginning of elementary school have been such a crucial part in who we are as students, and who we become in our careers after graduation.” I believe this quote to be very true. In elementary school and high school we were taught all kinds of different things but during this we found things we were interested in and things we didn't really like. These things helped us turn into the student we are today. I chose health and psychology to be my disciplines because they have always interested me. Since I was in high school I’ve been interested in health because I took a few health classes that opened my eyes to wellness and how to be a healthier person. Health is something that helps people and I found that to be very important. When I was a freshman in college I took a psychology class because it filled a criteria but it turned out to be very interesting and I liked it a lot. So from then on I’ve been taking psychology courses and I really enjoy them. The article “26 Where We Begin” has a quotes that I also found to be very interesting “Without the disciplines, interdisciplinarity would have nothing to build on, nothing to incorporate or weave together in order to find solutions to world problems.” This quote is very true, you need a foundation before you can build. Without disciplines there would be no interdisciplinary. Disciplines have expanded my knowledge. I have learned skills in researching, projects, studies and with people. The article “27 Disciplines as Social Communities” talks about social communities within disciplines and a interesting quote it gives it “What was interesting to me was thinking about disciplines outside of education and how they interact with each other and in which ways they belong to a social community.” I find this quote to be interesting because disciplines will help you in the community when it comes to work or even interacting with people in the world. Disciplines are important in everyday life.

10/10/2018 2 Comments IDS Statement: Mental Health When I first began my college career, I had no idea where it would lead me. I started off as a biology major here at plymouth state but after taking courses in this field I soon realized that it wasn’t for me. I really enjoyed taking the biology courses but I didn’t like some of courses that followed. I wanted to learn more of a variety of content. Once I realized I didn’t want to stick to being a biology major I was trying to find another major that interested me but instead of finding just one I found two, psychology and health. I thought how great would it be if I could combined biology, psychology and health into one major and interdisciplinary studies program helped me do that. My program is called Mental Health Studies. Mental health is a level of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness. I created this program because it is a combination of the three majors that really interest me and that I would like to learn more about, such as health, biology and psychology. No other program here at Plymouth State are right for me because nothing teaches me the variety of content that I am interested in. Interdisciplinary provides me with the opportunity to combine the best of several subject areas around a single theme and allow me to experience college in a way that interests and inspires me.
My biology background will help me in my program, understand the natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development and evolution. Biological Science 2, BI1120 covered the evolution, diversity, ecology and functioning of living systems, with a focus on both plants and animals. I found this course to be very interesting and it helped me with my understanding of neuroscience in psychology. Neuroscience is important when it come to psychology because it dives deeper into the human mind by scientifically observing the various biological and chemical processes that make the brain and nervous system function. Psychology is a big part of my program. Psychology has always interested me since I was in high school, I really enjoy learning about the mind and behaviors. The first psychology course I took in college was General Psychology 1, PS2010 at the University of Southern Maine when I was freshman. This course introduced me to the methods of psychology as a scientific study. I also took Human Growth and Development, PS2050 at USM. This course taught me information on the development of human growth throughout people's lives. I learned research, common physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development from young to old. The first psychology course I took at Plymouth State University was Abnormal Psychology, PS3320. This course I am currently taking, and it describes the symptoms, causes, and methods of treatment of the major forms of psychopathology. We are learning all different mental diseases and how they can be treated. In the future I plan to take Treatment of Psychological Disorder, PS4350. This course will teach me more about treatment methods for psychological disorders; cognitive-behavioral, medications and different kind of therapy. I also plan on taking Mental Health and Society SW3300. I think this course will be great for my interest in mental health and it will teach me psychological well-being. Lastly for psychology course I plan on taking Community Mental Health PS4330. This course will teach me how community mental health works to prevent mental health problems in different populations. Health and wellness is also a big part of my program. I find health and wellness to be very interesting for it is alway changing. I also find it to be a big part of everyone's life. I am currently taking Principles of Health, HE2300. This course is teaching me the fundamental issues related to health. I am learning different outcomes include understanding all the dimensions of health, health behaviors, and how to solve health issues. I am also currently taking Applied Nutrition for Healthy Living, HE3220. This course is teaching me about the fundamental concepts of nutrition and other substances in food, maintenance, growth, reproduction, and disease. It includes food intake, absorption, and how our bodies process the different food we eat. I plan to take Wellness Choices Healthy Active Life, PE2850 because this course will teach me personal awareness and responsibility for health and wellness focusing on the role of physical activity and healthy behaviors. Stress Management, HE3200 will provide me with with an overview of techniques to help manage stress and increase health and wellness. I also plan on taking Disease, Safety, and Environment, HE2900. This course will teach me an overview of all the basic diseases and disorders, as well as issues related to wellness safety in the environment. Lastly I plan on taking Illness, Wellness, and Healing, AN3500 because this course will teach me the concepts of illness, wellness, and healing reflect the societies and cultures. My program, Mental Health Studies, is a major that interests me and inspires me. Interdisciplinary has helped me realize what I am really interested in and what I want to learn more about. Before I found out about IDS I always thought you had to pick just one major and find a career that went with it but now you can combined different majors into one. Combining Health, biology and psychology into one major has really helped me figure out what I want to do for a career. I really enjoy helping people and I hope one day my career gets to do that. 10/10/2018 0 Comments eport post #2 What attracted me to interdisciplinary approaches to learn was that it provided me with a flexible degree specifically oriented to my career goals. I started off school with a major in biology but after taking a few classes in this field I soon realized that it wasn’t for me. I really enjoyed taking the biology courses but I didn’t like the other courses that followed. Once I realized I didn’t want to stick to biology I was trying to find another major that interested me but instead of finding just one I found two, psychology and health. I thought how great would it be if I could combined biology, psychology and health into one major and interdisciplinary studies helped me do that.
Interdisciplinary has already helped improve my education and my future. It has given me a better look on what I want to do for my career. Interdisciplinary has improved my education by letting me branch out to different majors that interest me instead of just focusing on one. By branching out to different majors you learn so much new knowledge in different fields but that you can combined together to help you in everyday life and problem solving. This knowledge will be helpful when I am looking for a job. I found this quote from Ten Cheers for Interdisciplinary by Moti Nissani to be very interesting, “We need to reconceptualize our model of disciplinary growth and specialization, adopting a more organic model that accounts for the intricate links among the many specializations.” There are so many different fields that could benefit from this. My experiences with Interdisciplinary learning so far has sharpened my ideas about the world knowledge. A project that really opened my eye and has helped shape my knowledge is my PLN plan in my IDS course. This project has really explained to me what interdisciplinary means and how it will help me in the world. My PLN plan helps me learn new things everyday about the world of health and psychology. This project also helps me understand social media better and how I can use it to get my ideas out into the world. A quote that really stood out to me in the Yuval Noah Harari on what the year 2050 has in store for humankind article was “Most important of all will be the ability to deal with change, to learn new things and to preserve your mental balance in unfamiliar situations. In order to keep up with the world of 2050, you will need not merely to invent new ideas and products you will above all need to reinvent yourself again and again.” This really stood out to me because the world is constantly changing which means we need to keep up with it by thinking of new ideas and being open to new things. 10/1/2018 0 Comments Interview Assignment We were given an assignment where we had to interview a professor in a field we expect might be part of our major. With that being said I chose Lynne Bates as the professor I would interview. Professor Bates is a health education teacher here at Plymouth State University. Health has always been something that has interested me because it is such an important part of our lives. The reason I chose Professor Bates to do my interview on is because I have her as one of my health teachers and I really enjoy her principles of health class. She also teaches a disease safety and the environment class. Professor Bates did not start school studying health education, when she originally started school she started as an anthropology archaeologist major but she did not find it to be as interesting as she thought it would be. She picked this major going into college because when she was in fourth grade one of her friends dads was an anthropology archaeologist and they went on trips all around the world and she thought that would be so much fun. Once she realized that health education was what she was really interested in she loved it. With this degree she had a few jobs throughout her career, such as a medical technologist, a fitness instructor, a high school teachers and a professor. Professor Bates continued to work at a public high school for awhile during the day and would teach a couple classes at Plymouth State during the night. Once she retired she is now only teaching classes here in Plymouth. She really enjoys working at Plymouth State University and all her students that she gets to teach. Professor Bates is a great example of how our interdisciplinary educations are important in the approaching future. She teaches all about different branches of heath and how they relate to our lives. I really enjoy having her as one of my teachers. |
